The grocery tax should go and so should the rebate. While your at it try something that will make a difference and address the train wreck of the property tax system.

I would be surprised if you didn't have to battle the IEA/NEA on this. Apparently, the Idaho Education Department, (IEA/NEA teacher unions) recieve a notable amount of funding from our sales tax. The sales tax has been " temporarily " raised in the past, but when the susnet is upon us the crying, howling and gnashing is so thunderous that, of course, our conservative government feigns a reluctant capitulatation.

Is there any data on how much money is taken in from grocery tax on individuals not from Idaho?

I feel that the $4000 rebate I get off sets most of the grocery tax that I pay. I am like others in that I feel the property tax should be "reformed".

From what I understand Idaho has a balanced budget amendment so they can't speed more than they bring in. To me it seems like the target should be on reducing what is spent in each of the property tax levy districts. That way they don't have to play the game of shifting property tax burden from one group to another

Bullseye! So totally agree. There should be taxes on luxuries & non essential items such as alcohol, cigarettes and the like (are these considered groceries?) With today's computer technology, it would be easy to program the computers so that "grocery" stores can continue selling it.

Don't repeal the tax...TRIPLE the rebate!

Repealing the tax WILL create another government agency...the one that will spend a ton of money on deciding which snack crackers, which soda water...etc are NOT foods and thus taxable. Change who gets the rebates. Adjusted gross incomes over 150k should no longer be eligible.

The real tax issue that must be addressed is the homeowners tax exemption for property taxes. A simple solution...triple that exemption for homeowners.. property vales have gone up 5x ...yet that exemption hasn't budged!

Well said and well thought out. Thanks for all you do and say.

This is one thing that has surprised me as we’ve been in Idaho is the grocery tax. In my Consumer economics classes this is clearly one of the most repressive taxes. I was shocked back then when I read around 1980 that for every dollar taken in taxes, it cost the government $3 to distribute it back. I’m guessing it costs a lot more now to “return” those dollars plus all the “hoops” people have to jump through to get them.

Washington state with all of the things it does wrong doesn’t tax groceries nor does Oregon. My thinking continues to be to reduce taxes and let people keep their own money and use it for their own needs. Keep up the good work! God bless your day with wisdom for all you do and say
