A Modern Reflection on Freedom — Inspired by John and Abigail Adams and the Declaration of Independence
249 years ago, our Founders did something the world had never seen they declared to tyrants, kings, and the world that our rights come from God, not government.
John Adams called it “the greatest question ever decided among men.” And he was right. Because in that Declaration of Independence, they boldly wrote:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
They didn’t beg for freedom. They declared it. They understood rights aren’t granted by politicians they’re given by God Almighty, and government exists to secure those rights, not to trample them. “DECLARTION OF INDEPENDENCE “
As I was reading John Adams’ letter to his beloved Abigail and reflecting on the Declaration of Independence, I couldn’t help but imagine the excitement, the weight, and the uncertainty they must have felt. The thrill of standing for liberty but also the sobering knowledge that such a bold resolution would come with a heavy price. “THE LETTER”
But what struck me most is how Abigail responded her words remind us that liberty isn't just a battlefield sacrifice, it's a generational responsibility.
In her own letter that same year, she wrote:
“The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army… We have too many high sounding words, and too few actions that correspond with them.”
Abigail understood freedom is not just words on parchment, it's lived out in courage, sacrifice, and personal conviction. She stood, like so many others, holding the home front, raising children, enduring separation, yet never wavering in her belief that liberty was worth the struggle.
In many ways, I feel that same tension today. The joy of knowing we are free yet the deep concern as I watch our liberties erode under the weight of overreaching government, crumbling values, and the rewriting of history.
Adams warned it would cost “Toil and Blood and Treasure” to maintain that Declaration and 249 years later, that warning still holds true. But like John and Abigail, we must see beyond the hardship to the “rays of ravishing light and glory.”
The Declaration wasn’t written with ink alone it was sealed with courage, sacrifice, and an unshakable belief that Truth matters, and freedom is worth defending.
Today, we must stand with the same resolve:
✔️ To defend Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
✔️ To reject tyranny, whether foreign or domestic.
✔️ To uphold our duty as free citizens, knowing that government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed not the other way around.
The Fourth of July is more than fireworks. It’s a call to remember and recommit to the sacred duty of preserving the freedoms declared on that historic day.
Freedom isn’t free. It never has been. It never will be. But it’s worth every ounce of courage, faith, and sacrifice required to defend it.
As John Adams wrote, “Posterity will triumph in that Day’s transaction, even though we may rue it.” And as Abigail reminded him, we need fewer empty words, and more action to match our convictions.
Let’s ensure future generations can still celebrate liberty, not mourn its loss.
This Independence Day, may we not only celebrate may we stand firm, speak truth, and defend the God-given freedoms our Founders risked everything to secure.
